New Moon

New Moon is the second book in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series. If you want to read my Twilight review click here: Twilight Review

What's better than shiny vampires? Friendly werewolves.

So, first things first... Team Edward! Just kinding… but really... Edward.
Ok, ok. Let's jump straight in. My very first book issue, Jasper. At the end of Twilight, Jasper was there when Bella was bleeding out on the studio floor. But now here in New Moon, Bella has a drop of blood from a paper cut that sends him into a ravenous frenzy!?! He can show restraint in the event of saving Bella's life fom another vampire, but not show restrain when it comes to saving Bella from himself. Hmm. Weird.

My next book issue, well it's more of a character issue. Dang Bella is cold-hearted in this book. I hadn't thought this before, but she majorly leads Jacob on. Several times she acknowledges it. Later in the book she thinks without realizing it Jacob had gotten way deeper feelings for her. Well Bella, constantly letting him hold your hand and call you honey... yeah, I can see how he got those deeper feelings.

Edward and Jacob

They are the same person. Ok, they aren't. They look different, and they are different "monsters." But anyone else note all the similarities. Jacob destroys a small tree, just as Edward did. After Jacob's change, he walked smooth and quiet, just like Edward. Jacob tells Bella he isn't good, just like Edward. Jacob sneaks into her room at night through the window, just as Edward did. Jacob has the same hot and cold attitude with Bella as Edward had. Edward could hear people's thoughts, Jacob in wolf form could hear his packs thoughts. I mean damn.

It was very obvious to me through the whole book she still had that deep, deep love for Edward even though she locked it away. If it wasn't obvious from her trying to constantly hear his voice, or thinking she would never love Jacob enough, it was solidified when she was drowning and only thinking of Edward. But also when she figured out Jacob was a werewolf, her father tells her to be safe and stay out of the woods that there had been another wolf attack, she just goes straight to believing that the wolves and Jacob are bad. Even though she told Edward she knew he wouldn't hurt her, and that she trusted him completely. That's very uneven.

All the Sad Feels

This book was intense, so much mental drama with a little physical drama.

Edward depressed over the incident, clearly an internal struggle before he leaves.
Bella going through the woods to find Edward after the breakup. Falling and decided to just stay down, because what's the point of ever getting up again.
The months of depression Bella goes through, see the top of this post.
She is constantly obsessing over her age even after months of Edward being gone.
Constantly referring to a giant whole in her chest, not being whole and never working right again - also months after Edward had been gone.
Bella continually doing dangerous things to hear Edwards voice - and several times she does acknowledge how crazy that sounds.
She is drowning and she is thinking of Edward - and she is disappointed to hear Jacob's voice. Immediately following this, as in the same day, she finds herself thinking she loves Jacob, but it will never be enough but that maybe she could just be with him so he would be happy because she wanted that for him... Wow. I know that was a big run on sentence. It needed to be.
Jacob having to realize that Bella is choosing Edward at the end. Bella reaching out for Jacob even though, she knows Edward is her choice as she has thought several times that she doesn't love Jacob enough. Jacob's face crumpling in pain and Bella thinking she will see him smile again. Bella, sweetie, no.

The Movie

This movie was definitely better than Twilight, but there were still some book-to-movie issues.

The who's going to be the third wheel, it's Mike, movie trip. In the book, Mike does get sick, but in the movie, they make it more dramatic with an almost fight between Mike and Jacob, because of Jacob starting his change.

I wish the movie had include Bella getting sick and Charlie attempting to take care of her, giving her water and carrying her to bed. Such a sweet dad moment - yes, I know there weren't enough.

In the book, Sam and the other boys were there for Bella and Jacob's first interaction since he ghosted her (because of the change). Bella asked to talk to him alone and everyone including Jacob looked at Sam for approval. Bella is crying during part of the exchange, which is hard to tell in the movie because it's raining. It starts to rain at the end of the talk and Jacob just walks back inside. Leaving Bella standing staring at the Black house for a long length of time. This was brought to an end by Billy coming out saying Charlie had called and she should head home. This would have been a great moment to do right in the movie.

The movie didn't include Charlie looking concerned when she comes home, like a ghost in her eye of her months of depression. Her and Charlie have a talk about Sam and his gang. Once upstairs Bella overhears Charlie chewing Billy out. Billy trying to put things on Bella because she led Jacob on... I mean he's not wrong.

Bella "heard" Edward a lot more in the book.

I really liked how the movie condensed the scenes when Bella realized what Jacob was and the fight between Jacob and Paul. Although in the book Bella doesn't confront Paul, she is far too scared for that. Paul just gets angry at Jacob fpr bringing Bella to their meeting and finding a way around Sam's orders.

In the book, Alice was there visiting at least one or two nights before Edward calling. I love Alice.

The Volturi scene was made more dramatic in the movie. Jane does use her power on Edward in the book, but he isn't almost killed. I do love the Volturi casting. And I still really liked this scene.

In the book Edward and Bella had their relationship talk when they got back to forks. Bella couldn't stop being sure she was dead or in a dream. Bella also caught a flaw in Edwards soul logic (him not having one). When he thought he was dead, that the Volturi had killed him, Bella was in his arms. He said Carlisle was right, implying he was with Bella in the afterlife. Reading it again, I was like OHHHH she got you good.

The Cullen's vote. In the book, I liked the more formal feel they all gathered around the table. Everyone's vote was the same, although Jasper doesn't explain in the book and his yes surprises Bella (though it really shouldn't). Edward gets up, going to the other room to break something loudly, and comes back in yelling. I wish that would have happened. It really shows Edward's emotions much better.

In the book, Jacob, Edward and Bella's talk happens right behind her house. After which Jacob brings Bella's motorcycle to her house to get her into trouble in an attempt to keep her away from Edward.

Chief Swan

You have got to love those normal (human) dad moments. I know I mentioned Charlie at the end of my Twilight post, so I decided it was fitting to do it again.

Charlie's attempts to comfort her and take care of her, although weak and not as a mom would (not Renee obviously), were very much dad responses. Not really sure what to do, but still wanting to do something, anything. So, he brings her a glass of water. And he carries her to bed when she fell asleep with her head on the toilet.

Charlie talking with Bella after Jacob says that they can't be friends anymore, but she feels broken up with. Bella telling him that Jacob has gotten involved with Sam and his cult. Charlie seems skeptical. He calls and chews Billy out for Jacob hurting Bella and possibly sending her into another depression spiral. AWW.

Charlie, poor Charlie, having to worry over Bella for days yet again, and at the same time as last year (in Twilight). Charlie immediately jumping down Edwards throat when he brings Bella home, nearly passed out from exhaustion. And of course, grounding Bella deservedly so.

Charlie getting very, very angry about the motorcycle - again just like every dad. No dad wants their daughter on the back of a guy's motorcycle, but to find out she had been riding herself in secret. Charlie tries to forbid her from seeing Edward anymore, but Bella threatens to move out - what a dramatic teen thing to do.

Oh, Charlie.

Through all the sad, I still loved this book and even through the changes still loved the movie.
